Organically sourced cotton terry towelling

Organic cotton means that the fibre has been cultivated against stringent checks and rules of bio-cultivation and organic farming.

Organic farming is a production method defined and regulated at EC level by EEC Reg. 2092/91.

In organic farming synthetic chemical substances (such as fertilisers, weeding chemicals, anti-fungal insecticides and pesticides in general) or Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) cannot be used.

Crop production is mainly done by selecting species resistant to pests and the continuation of certain cultivation techniques such as;

  • Crop rotation; avoiding cultivation of the same crop for more seasons in a row on the same soil, this technique destroys the favourable environment which allows pests to proliferate, the natural nutrients of the soil are also used in a less intensive way.
  • Planting bushes and trees; this gives shelter to natural predators of common pests and acts as a physical barrier to possible external pollutants.
  • Inter-cropping; simultaneous planting of different crops in the same space, which each crop being unfavourable to the others pests.

In organic farming, only natural fertilisers are used, such as manure and other composted organic substances (green cuttings etc.)

The cotton fibre can only be protected from pests using natural substances which are clearly defined in the EEC Reg. 2092/91.
